Notes from our CEO & Founder: My First Automation Job

My first job as a field service engineer shaped everything about how I approach new challenges.

I had two weeks of training on one machine, then my employer started sending me across the country to fix equipment I had never even seen before. When I told my scheduler I had no training on those machines, he always said the same thing: “You’ll figure it out.”

So, I did. Factory after factory, schematic after schematic, with multimeter in hand. After a hundred site visits, the fear of the unknown simply disappeared. I learned that confidence is built by overcoming challenges, over and over again.

It is why starting Automationtechies and Automation.com more than 25 years ago never scared me, even when it took over two years to turn a profit. I trusted I would figure it out.

What surprises me today is how many talented automation professionals doubt themselves when facing something new. If you are one of them, remember this: It’s very rare for anyone to feel fully prepared for a new role.

Your engineering degree wasn’t designed to teach you everything, it was designed to teach you how to learn and how to solve problems.

So don’t worry. You’ll figure it out.
